A pre-roll is exactly what it sounds like: dried cannabis that's already ground and rolled into a joint. It's the most convenient way to smoke flower. No grinder, no papers, no rolling skills required. But the shelf can be confusing. Here's how to read it.
Sizes
Pre-rolls are sold by the weight of cannabis inside each one. The most common sizes:
| Size | Often called | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 0.3–0.35 g | "Dogwalker", mini | A few puffs; easy to finish |
| 0.5 g | Half-gram | One person, one session |
| 1 g | Full gram | Sharing, or saving for later |
Smaller is usually smarter, especially if you're new. A full gram is a lot of cannabis for one person, and once it's lit it doesn't keep well.
Singles vs. multi-packs
- Singles let you try a product without committing.
- Multi-packs (for example 3 × 0.5 g or 10 × 0.35 g) cost less per gram and are handy if you already know what you like.
Packs are sold by total weight, so a 10 × 0.35 g pack is 3.5 g of cannabis. That counts toward Ontario's 30-gram public possession limit.
Regular vs. infused
Regular pre-rolls
These contain only dried flower, so their strength matches the flower they're made from, typically shown as a THC percentage on the label.
Infused pre-rolls
Infused pre-rolls have extra cannabis concentrate added: distillate, kief, hash or oil, either inside or coated on the outside. They're much stronger than regular pre-rolls, often dramatically so.
What to look for on the label
- THC and CBD. Look at Total THC for flower-based products. THC vs. CBD explains the difference.
- Weight per pre-roll and number in the pack.
- Packaged-on date. Fresher is better; pre-rolls dry out faster than flower in a jar.
- Infused or not. This is usually stated clearly, but check.
Tips for a better pre-roll
- Light it evenly. Rotate it while lighting so it burns straight rather than "canoeing" down one side.
- Go slow. Take a puff or two, then wait several minutes. Smoked cannabis acts within minutes, but the full effect takes up to 30 minutes.
- Put it out properly if you don't finish it, and store the rest in its tube.
- Mind where you are. Smoking a pre-roll follows the same rules as smoking tobacco. In Sudbury, city parks, beaches and trails are smoke-free. See where you can smoke in Sudbury.
Storing pre-rolls
Keep them in their tubes, in a cool, dark place, and locked away from kids and pets. They lose freshness within weeks once opened. How to Store Cannabis Safely has more.
