If you roll your own joints or use a dry herb vaporizer, a grinder is the one accessory worth owning. It breaks dried flower into an even, consistent texture, which makes for a smoother, more even burn and better vaporizing. Here's how to pick one.
Why bother grinding?
Breaking flower apart by hand works in a pinch, but it leaves uneven chunks and sticky fingers. A grinder gives you:
- An even burn in a joint, with less canoeing down one side
- More consistent vapour in a dry herb vaporizer
- Less waste, because the resin stays in the grinder, not on your hands
Two-piece vs. four-piece
Two-piece
A lid and a base with teeth. You grind, then scoop out the flower.
- Pros: simple, compact, cheap, easy to clean
- Cons: flower can get packed into the teeth, and there's no way to collect kief
Three-piece
Adds a chamber with a screen: ground flower drops through the teeth into the chamber, which makes it easy to tap out.
Four-piece
Adds a kief catcher under the screen. Kief, the fine resin glands that fall off flower, collects at the bottom over time.
- Pros: cleanest grind, easy to empty, collects kief
- Cons: bulkier, more parts to clean
Materials
| Material | Good | Not so good |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminium | Durable, sharp teeth, good value | Cheap ones can shed metal flakes |
| Stainless steel | Very durable, easy to clean | Heavier and pricier |
| Wood | Classic look, light | Harder to clean; no kief screen |
| Plastic or acrylic | Cheap, light | Teeth wear out and can crack |
For most people, a mid-priced aluminium four-piece is the sweet spot.
Features worth having
- Sharp, diamond-shaped teeth cut cleanly rather than crush.
- A magnetic lid keeps it closed in a bag.
- Smooth threads stop it from seizing up as resin builds.
- The right size: 50–63 mm across suits most people. Bigger holds more but is less portable.
Using and cleaning it
- Don't overfill. Break larger buds into pieces and keep them away from the centre pin.
- Turn a few times both ways, then tap the side.
- Clean it regularly. A soft brush handles weekly cleaning. For a deep clean, soak metal grinders in isopropyl alcohol, rinse with warm water and dry completely before reassembling.
- Store it with your cannabis, locked away from kids. Grinders often have residue in them. See How to Store Cannabis Safely.
