Choosing a Vape Cartridge: 510 Threads and More
510 threads, batteries, distillate vs. live resin and dosing: what to know before you buy a cannabis vape cartridge.

Vape cartridges are small, discreet and quick to use, which is why they're popular. They're also concentrates, much stronger than dried flower, so they deserve a little more care. Here's how the pieces fit together and what to look for.
The two parts: cartridge and battery
A cartridge ("cart") holds cannabis oil and a heating element. It screws onto a battery, which powers it.
510 thread: the standard
Most cartridges use a 510 thread, a near-universal screw fitting. Any 510 battery fits any 510 cartridge, which makes it easy to swap products. A few brands use their own closed systems (pods) that only work with that brand's battery.
Battery types
| Battery | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Draw-activated | Turns on when you inhale | Simplicity |
| Button | Press to heat | More control |
| Variable voltage | Adjustable heat setting | Fine-tuning flavour and harshness |
Lower voltage is gentler and preserves flavour. Higher voltage gives bigger puffs but can be harsh. If your battery is adjustable, start low.
What's in the cartridge
Distillate
Highly refined THC oil. Very potent and consistent, with most natural terpenes removed and sometimes added back for flavour.
Live resin and other full-spectrum oils
Made to keep more of the plant's original terpenes and minor compounds, so the flavour is closer to the flower. Usually costs more. Terpenes Explained covers why aroma varies.
Reading the strength
Cartridges are usually labelled in mg of THC per gram or mg per unit. Expect numbers far higher than flower: a cartridge can easily be several times the concentration of a typical flower. How to Read a Cannabis Label walks through the fields.
Dosing a vape
- One short, gentle puff is a dose to start with.
- Effects arrive within minutes and peak within about 30 minutes.
- It's easy to take "just one more" because vapes are so quick. Pause between puffs.
- If you take too much, see Had Too Much Cannabis?.
Using it well
- Store upright in a cool spot to reduce leaks and clogs.
- Keep batteries out of the cold. A car in a Sudbury February will drain a battery fast and thicken the oil.
- Clogged? Warm it gently in your hand, or use your battery's preheat function if it has one.
- Don't overtighten the cartridge on the battery; snug is enough.
The rules still apply
A vape is still cannabis smoke as far as the law is concerned:
- Vaping cannabis follows the same rules as smoking: no patios, city parks, trails, bus shelters or indoor public spaces. See Where You Can (and Can't) Smoke Cannabis in Sudbury.
- Never in a vehicle that's being driven, passengers included.
- A 1 g cartridge counts as 4 g toward Ontario's 30-gram public possession limit.
Storage and safety
Vapes look like pens and USB sticks, so keep cartridges and batteries locked away from kids, and dispose of empties properly rather than leaving them on a counter. How to Store Cannabis Safely has more.
