Edibles are one of the most precise ways to take cannabis: every package tells you exactly how many milligrams of THC you're getting. They're also the easiest to overdo, because they're slow. This guide compares the main types and how to choose one.
The rules that apply to every edible
- Maximum 10 mg of THC per package in Canada.
- No added alcohol or nicotine, and caffeine is limited.
- Start with 2.5 mg of THC or less, and wait at least two hours before taking more. Effects take 30 minutes to two hours to begin and up to four hours to peak.
How Long Do Edibles Take to Kick In? covers the timing in detail.
Gummies and soft chews
The most popular edible format.
- Dosing: usually individually portioned, often 2.5 mg or 5 mg per piece. Check the label for mg per piece.
- Pros: easy to split into consistent doses, portable, long shelf life.
- Cons: they look and taste like candy, which makes storage around kids especially important.
Chocolate
- Dosing: typically a bar scored into squares, each with a set dose. Some are single pieces.
- Pros: easy to break into smaller amounts.
- Cons: melts in a warm car or window, which can make doses uneven. Store somewhere cool.
Drinks
Cannabis drinks include sparkling waters, sodas, teas and drink mixes.
- Dosing: labelled in mg per can or bottle. Doses vary, so read before you sip.
- Pros: familiar to drink, and easy to sip slowly.
- Cons: easy to drink quickly by habit. Treat each can as a dose, not a beverage.
- Possession: liquids count toward the 30-gram limit at 70 g of drink per 1 g of dried cannabis, so cans add up quickly. See Ontario's 30-Gram Limit.
THC, CBD or both
Edibles come THC-dominant, CBD-dominant or balanced. If you want a gentler experience, Health Canada's guidance is to choose low THC with an equal or higher amount of CBD. THC vs. CBD explains the difference.
Choosing your first edible
- Pick a low dose: 2.5 mg THC per piece or less.
- Pick a format you'll portion easily: individually wrapped gummies or scored chocolate.
- Read the whole label: mg per piece, mg per package, CBD and best-before date. Our label guide walks through it.
- Plan your evening: at home, no driving, no alcohol.
Storage
Keep edibles in their original child-resistant packaging, locked, and away from your regular snacks. Ontario saw a sharp rise in child poisonings after edibles became legal. How to Store Cannabis Safely has practical setups.
